Yishun English Tuition for Yusof Ishak Secondary School is a historical-title guide preserved on eduKateYishun. This page is not affiliated with Yusof Ishak Secondary School and does not represent current school or centre arrangements. Its present role is to examine revision stopping rules: how students know when another edit is useful and when continued polishing has become low-value.
Revision matters, but endless revision can consume time, increase doubt and even damage answers that were already sound. The useful ideas here are editing, perfectionism, calibration, diminishing returns, self-checking and time management.
The goal is not to reduce care. It is to give revision a purpose, a sequence and a clear stopping condition.
Revision should answer a question
Do not reread simply because the work feels unfinished.
Check one layer at a time: task fit, paragraph logic, evidence, sentence clarity or a known grammar risk.
High-value edits come first
Changing a weak thesis matters more than replacing one ordinary adjective.
Students should repair structural problems before surface polish.
Repeated editing can reduce confidence
A learner may change correct sentences because uncertainty remains after the first check.
A stopping rule protects good work from reassurance-driven rewriting.
Worked writing lab
A student has five minutes left.
First check whether every paragraph answers the task. Next check the student’s two recurring grammar risks. Do not spend the remaining time replacing vocabulary unless meaning is genuinely unclear.
Use evidence before changing an answer
An answer should be revised because the text, question or grammar gives a reason—not because the student suddenly feels nervous.
This separates useful checking from anxiety-driven checking.
A practical revision sequence
- check task fit
- check structure
- check missing explanation
- check personal error patterns
- fix only evidence-based problems
- stop when the planned checks are complete
Stopping rules can protect sleep too
At home, students sometimes keep editing assignments late into the evening because “one more improvement” is always possible.
A defined quality threshold and stop time can prevent perfectionism from expanding indefinitely.
Frequently asked questions
Should students always use all remaining exam time to edit?
They should use time intelligently, but repeated low-value editing is not automatically better.
How many times should an essay be checked?
Use a small number of purposeful passes rather than repeated whole-text rereading.
How do we prevent careless mistakes without overchecking?
Build a short personal checklist around recurring risks.
Teaching Guide | Revise with a purpose, then stop
Prioritise structure, meaning and recurring errors. Require evidence before making late changes.
The goal is a learner who can improve work deliberately without becoming trapped in endless correction.
